Animal Research Core (ARC)

Clinical Medicine Program

All animals involved in biomedical research at The Ohio State University are observed daily. Health concerns are directed to the attention of the clinical veterinarian and communicated to the Principal investigator. Treatment plans are developed as a concerted effort between ULAR and PI staff to determine the most appropriate treatment regime for the animal while considering the research goals and ensuring regulatory compliance.

This process is coordinated through laboratory animal health technicians working directly with the laboratory animal residents and clinical veterinarians and relies heavily on the husbandry staff that provides the extensive daily care and observation of all animals in ULAR Vivariums.

Diagnostic Lab

ULAR provides health surveillance within rodent animal facilities via a “Sentinel Program, Vendor reports, and Environmental testing”. In addition, the Diagnostic Lab coordinates the importation and quarantine of animals from non-approved sources (i.e. other universities or vendors without dedicated shippers) and provides communication, health reports, and coordinates shipping of rodents to universities and institutions outside of OSU

Surgery Program

The ULAR Experimental Surgery core is located in Wiseman Hall. The core has a full-time staff of veterinary technicians, state of the art operating rooms, and associated support areas such as pharmacy, prep, and post-op recovery. Extensive surgical support equipment such as fluoroscopy, ultrasound, and laparoscopic setups are available for use in the suite. A variety of animals such as pigs, dogs, rabbits, and sheep are routinely used for surgical animal models of heart failure, wound healing, GI disease, etc…In addition, the core supports an extensive training program for health professional from all over the world.

Training Program

The training program provides instruction to research and ULAR staff alike. Animal use orientation classes are mandated by the USDA, while other available classes provide assistance to research staff regarding animal handling and technical procedures. Additionally, training is provided to advance ULAR staff through the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) technician training program. This program allows for certification of ULAR staff at the following levels: ALAT, LAT, LATg, and CMAR.
